The sciatic nerve passes through this muscle. When this muscle is in spasm it will put  pressure on the sciatic nerve and cause sciatic type of symptoms which you already mentioned. this is often an overlooked condition and that is easily corrected. Deep tissue massage to the piriformis muscle, electrical stimulation, and heat or combination of heat 10 minutes followed by ice for 10 minutes can bring dramatic relief.
