Best Lumbar Support Cushions

Best back support cushions for lower back painHave you been feeling that you need some extra support for your lower back when sitting down?

Does your lower back ache when sitting?

What you can do is use a good lumbar support cushion.

These cushions are designed to:

  • Follow the natural contour of the lumbar spine,
  • To help fill in the air gap between the back of a chair and you &
  • To gently push into your spine to help you relax your posture muscles from excess tension.

However, which one should you choose?

I’ve looked at different options for you to help you find the perfect one for your situation.

Top Rated Back Support Cushions

Below you will find three products I would recommended. This should help you if you are in the market looking for which is the best back support cushion to buy no matter your budget.

1. Medipaq 3D Lumbar Cushion – Ideal for Office Chairs

The Medipaq 3D Lumbar Cushion is a well designed back support cushion.

The Medipaq is made from memory foam (a.k.a visco-elastic). You might know I’m a big fan of memory foam pillows. The same goes for lumbar supports made from memory foam.

They are comfortable to sit against and feel supportive on the spine and muscles.

It is intersting to see the manufacturer states the density of their memory foam being 4lbs.

The cushion has the typical lumbar lordosis curve you’d expect, but, with an added bump. This unique feature appears to give a little extra focal point of support. This is to enhance the support feeling directly over the mid-lumbar region where our lordotic curve is at the deepest point.

  • Size: 34 x 35 x 12 cm
  • Color options: black, blue, grey, pink, green
  • Weight: 300 grams

Lets compare some of the other features:

  • Ergonomically contoured to support either deep or flat curved lower backs
  • Travel friendly can be used in a small car, vans or a large lorry for truck drivers
  • Removable mesh fabric cover for easy cleaning
  • Adjustable strap to use on an office chair
  • 4lbs memory foam designed to help even heavier people
  • Memory foam can feel hot to sit against for a long time.
  • Some users might feel it is not forgiving enough or too large for smaller frame people, like petite females.
Where to Buy
The Medipaq 3D back cushion is available to buy on Amazon here .

2. Original McKenzie Lumbar Super Roll – Best for Car

The McKenzie lumbar rolls are very well designed to help lower back pain.

The McKenzie cushion range has four product options.

  1. McKenzie 4 inch lumbar roll
  2. McKenzie 5 inch lumbar roll
  3. McKenzie D-Shaped roll
  4. McKenzie Super roll

I feel, for most people, the best option is to go with the McKenzie super roll. If you need something that is firmer or longer then one of the other three would be a good choice.

The Super roll is designed to fit nicely in most kinds of backed seats, like a mobility chair. It should fit snuggly in the lumbar region when leaning back on it. It has a flat edge so that it doesn’t roll up and down easily in a chair, once you’ve placed it at your desired height level.

If you have been told you have a more pronounced lumbar lordotic curvature, then you might be better to go with the D-Shaped roll. This option has a deeper 13cm vs the 6cm depth compared to the Super roll.

Take note that the 4 inch & 5 inch rolls are circular and don’t have a flat side. I feel these circular rolls are good for using on a sofa, or, if you need even more depth.

  • Size: varies depending on product choosen
  • Color options: black
  • Weight: 290 grams

Lets compare some of the other features:

  • Designed by back pain specialist, Robin McKenzie, whose books I highly recommend
  • Travel friendly can be used in a small car, vans or a large lorry for truck drivers
  • Removable mesh fabric cover for easy cleaning
  • Thick adjustable strap to fix the height on the chairs backing
  • More discrete so not bulky & noticeable like the other options
  • Made from standard density foam not memory foam.
  • Can be confusing which option to choose.
Where to Buy
The McKenzie Super Lumbar Roll is available to buy on Amazon here .

3. MemorySoft Lumbar Support Cushion

The Memorysoft memory foam back cushion is a great simple pillow support.

This is a classic shaped back cushion compared to the Medipaq option above.

This cushion is perfect if you need a decent, smart looking lumbar support to use around the office, or even on a luxury car seat.

The anatomical design is meant to help follow the angle of the small of the lower back.

If you feel that you need a quick fix for a chair vs getting an ergonomic office chair, this will do the job.

I do like how neatly tucked away the strap is that goes round the back of a chair.

If you feel confused as to which way up or down it needs to go, don’t worry, quite a few people feel the same. You put the wider (thicker) part at the bottom and the more narrow (thinner) edge at the top. Some might feel they like it the other way round for whatever reason.

  • Size: 34.5 x 32.5 x 10.4 cm
  • Color options: black
  • Weight: 590 grams

Lets compare some of the other features:

  • Use at home, in the car or at in an office job
  • Removable mesh fabric cover for easy cleaning
  • Adjustable strap to set the height it sits on the back of a chair
  • Good to use on a dinning room chair or in a nursing home to add some extra comfort
  • Not as deep as the Medipaq
  • Size might be an issue in more narrow car seats
Where to Buy
The Memorysoft Lumbar Support cushion is available to buy on Amazon here .

Benefits of Lumbar Support Cushions

Anatomy of the spine

Support Your Spinal Anatomy

  • Help ease lower back ache
  • Take some pressure off the lumbar discs
  • Ideal for L4-5 or L5-S1 disc herniation or bulge patients
  • Can help sciatica in the leg
  • Help prevent excessive slouching
  • Aid in relaxing lower back muscle strain

There are different reasons people might look at using an ergonomic support, like a cushion.

The ultimate goal is to use a product that follows the natural lordosis curvature found in the lower back region.

Our seated lumbar spinal curve, when at the proper angle, is designed to evenly distribute our body weight across joints, muscles, discs and ligaments. If this curve is over arching or is too flat, you might get back pain (a.k.a lumbago).

This is why a soft chair can make you slump too much by sinking into it. You could also be on a seat that is too hard and uncomfortable so you end up sitting on the edge.

Using a portable device, like a lumbar support cushion, can help mitigate the issues that come with prolonged sitting a.k.a 23.5 Hour Disease.

Humans are not designed to sit in an office chair all day. That is why so many people who have to work on a computer all day feel they need an ergonomic support.

Points to Answer Before Buying

Here are some questions I feel you need to answer before deciding, which product to go ahead & purchase.

Back support for a mobility scooter seat

Different seats mean different needs

  1. Who will be using it? A person on a mobility scooter (like in the picture) has different needs compared to an office worker who can get up and down from a chair easily. Same goes for an elderly person in a nursing home vs a younger adult.
  2. Is the cushion the right size for you? If you have a smaller frame or body weight then your needs are different to someone who is a plus size in weight or over 6 foot tall.
  3. What seat will you use it on? Different cushions can work better on certain types of seats. You can get away with a bulky support on an office chair but it might not fit nicely in a car seat when you are driving.
  4. How long will you be sitting at a time? Sitting for short periods means you might be able to need a minimal cushion. However, if you are a IT person who is stuck behind a desk all day then you need something a bit more maybe.
  5. How warm is it where you will be using it? Some people might want the see through mesh supports on the market. These are great for not making you sweat on your lower back. However, they lose their shape easily, that is why I didn’t add an option above.

I hope this helps guide you where to look for the bets solution. If you need anymore tips check out my how to help a trapped nerve in your lower back page that has more information.

Don’t Die Early Book by Rocky Angelucci: My Positive Review

Don't Die Early Book Review

Don’t Die Early Author Rocky Angelucci

I love those books you start reading and end up not being able to put it down because it’s just such a good story you just need to know what happens at the end. These kind of awesome reading events are normally reserved for the latest fictional novel series to hit the book stores and definitely not for a book about health.

Well, prepared to be pleasantly surprised and, I hope, youthfully excited about knowing how to really test your state of health, your state of wellness.

Have I got your attention yet? I just finished reading the kindle ebook titled “Don’t Die Early: The Life You Save Can Be Your Own” by Rocky Angelucci and I wanted to blog about it straight away. In today’s post I needed to let you know why I’m excited by what I learnt, why I’m going to be recommending this book to my Chiropractic patients and a for you to hear my book review. Eggshell Membrane Supplement: Why It’s Good for Your Joints

Eggshell Membrane Joint Supplement

Yup you read that right, the headline says how taking eggshell membrane supplements can help to reduce your joint ache. People like to ask me if they should be taking health supplements to help with their knee osteoarthritis, hip joint pain, back pain and general joint aches. I believe good nutrition is very important for our overall health and plays a big part in muscle, joint and nerve pain management, as I mentioned in the deflame diet.

Most people know, or have heard about, glucosamine and chondroitin supplements for knee osteoarthritis. I stumbled across how there is a new joint support supplement called BiovaFlex™ which is made up of the natural eggshell membrane (a.k.a NEM). I know I had to find out more, like you want to now know, about “how can taking membrane from an eggshell be good for us?” Continue reading

I know how people who are looking for back pain relief will tend to use a pain relief gel or cream to rub on the painful area. Today I wanted to let you know more about Biofreeze pain relief gel which I have used on myself. Continue reading

Essentia Organic Memory Foam

Recently I cam across a new very different memory foam manufacturer called, Essentia. I am definitely a fan of memory foam pillows and mattresses for their effect on my quality sleep for my overall health and my neck posture in particular. I have been exposed to lots of different manufacturers of memory foam pillows and mattresses like Tempur pedic pillows and Tempur pedic mattresses over the years. What caught my eye with Essentia is their slogan “World’s Only Natural Memory Foam“. Today I want to share with you more info on the Essentia memory foam history and the Essentia natural memory foam pillow and mattress product range. Continue reading

Deflame Diet: How to Eat Anti-Inflammatory Foods For Pain Relief

Deflame Diet

Anti-Inflammatory Diet

We all realise how food choices in our diets affects our general health and well-being. Even in muscle or joint pain inflammatory conditions like gout or arthritis, diet plays a pivotal role.

This point really came home recently for me again, when after years of telling my mum about using food as a medicine and eating anti-inflammatory foods she finally saw the benefits of diet.

My mum has a right osteo-arthrtic hip joint that has been flaring up with pain the last 2-3 years. She doesn’t want hip replacement surgery so I have been trying to help her with conservative pain management options. I actually sent her to a Rheumatologist for arthritis pain-killer medication. This is when she finally tried an arthritis diet change because the Rheumatologist told her to stop sugar in her diet. My mum finally realised how pain is linked to the food we eat.

This is what I want to talk about today and the concept of the Deflame Diet by chiropractor, David Seamen. I also found a free online shopping trolley that helps you choose healthier foods. Continue reading

Inversion Table Therapy for Low Back Pain

Inversion Table Therapy Low Back Pain

An Inversion Therapy View

Maybe you have heard about inversion therapy for low back pain from a friend or know someone who swears by this type of lumbar traction. Hanging by your ankles on an inversion table is quite an appealing idea for some low back pain sufferers who feel if only someone could stretch them out to release the pressure.

Today I wanted to look a bit into inversion tables, what people have found with regards to inversion traction therapy and low back pain and some videos of people using and inversion table. Continue reading

The Four Hour Body Book Review

Four Hour Body Book Review

Get the Body You Want

I came across the new book by famous biohacker and author, Timothy Ferriss. The book is titled: The Four Hour Body: An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman.

Tim wrote another best seller book in the past called: “The 4-Hour Work Week: Escape the 9-5, Live Anywhere and Join the New Rich“. I really liked his first book on how to change and optimise your working lifestyle setup. What I have read in his second book on how to change your health lifestyle he hasn’t disappointed me again.

I stumbled across some videos about the 4 hour body techniques. Tim explains more about his concept on how to get healthy, loss fat, solve long-term pain problems, increase fertility and more.

You can watch the videos below if you would like to understand more about the new Tim Ferris book The Four Hour Body and how Tim experimented on himself to get the results he did. It could be lifestyle changing for you. Continue reading

Foot Levelers CPD Course: AECC Nov 2010

Foot Levelers CPD Course

I was excited to see today that Foot Levelers are going to be doing a course at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic in Bournemouth in November.

You may remember how I wear custom-made orthotics in my shoes everyday which are made by Foot Levelers. So knowing that Foot Levelers are finally going to be in the UK I think is great for both for UK chiropractors and their patients. Heal Your Bulging Disc Book by Dr Ron Daulton Jnr

Heal Your Bulging Disc Book

Book by Chiropractor, Dr Ron Daulton Jnr

There are many people who are searching and reading online at this health blog for help with nerve entrapment pain. This normal comes from suffering a pinched nerve either in their neck or lower back. So I went looking myself for what is available to buy online. This is when I came across the ebook titled: “Heal Your Bulging Disc” by Dr Ron Daulton, Jnr.

Ron is a chiropractor based in the USA. Apparently, he has had many patients come into his clinic with a nerve being trapped with pain referring down their arm or leg. He decided to write a book on his experience with these types of patients who have spinal disc conditions like a herniated disc or bulging disc. From what I have read, this was so he could help those that he couldn’t physically see in his private practice. Continue reading

How Safe is Your Health: Trigene Germ Disinfectant

Bacteria Disinfectant

Bacteria Disinfectant

In the UK there is a problem in the healthcare industry, particularly hospitals, with bad bugs or super bugs causing secondary hospital infection problems in patients. These germs include: bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi.

Other than super bugs in hospitals these germs are all around us in all the spaces we live in. This is our social places like homes and playgrounds and even your workplace. So what disinfectant could you use to help minimise excessive exposure to dangerous types of germs around you? I personally use a product called Trigene in the Chiropractic clinic to help disinfect all my therapy equipment. Since I think it is such a great product in todays post I just wanted to let you know all about what is Trigene and how does it work.

Chiropractic T-Shirts: Medication Side-Effects Danger

I got this photo of a Chiropractic T-shirt in a forward email today from another chiropractor looking at the cascade of prescription medication side effects. I think if you read what is on the shirt you’ll get the humorous, but serious health message on it. A medication can have side-effects, which then needs other medications to solve that problem.

Keeping things simple in life is sometimes the better option for your health, and the easiest. Unfortunately there are many people out there taking too many chronic prescription medicines. Continue reading

What is Low Level Laser Therapy Used For?

Low Level Laser Therapy Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is also commonly known as biostimulation, photobiomodulation & cold laser therapy. Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is a form of phototherapy that involves the application of low power monochromatic and coherent light to injuries and lesions to stimulate healing.

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is used to increase the speed, quality and tensile strength of tissue repair, resolve inflammation and give pain relief. The effects of Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) are especially striking in areas of the body where cells are under stress. Today, Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) are used in a variety of medical and surgical fields, including chiropractic, dentistry, osteopathic, physiotherapy, cosmetic, pain attenuation, diabetic wound healing and acupuncture to name but a few. Cold Laser Therapy

Cold Laser Therapy

Healing Power of Light

I recently attended an annual chiropractic conference and was exposed to some different pain relief technology, Cold Laser Therapy.

Cold Laser Therapy is also known as low level laser therapy. This laser is different from laser beams slicing you open in movies or eye surgery correction laser like lasik.

Cold Laser Therapy uses light-emitting diodes to stimulate or inhibit cellular function. The cold laser therapy technique is also known by the more ambiguous terms laser therapy and phototherapy (though the latter more accurately refers to light therapy), which may also be used to describe other medical techniques. A famous chiropractor who believes in cold laser therapy is Jeff Spencer who was Lance Armstrong’s chiropractor.

What is Cold Laser Therapy?

Cold Laser Therapy sounds interesting, does it not.

Currently basic research on cold laser therapy and work on specific treatments are being pursued with testing various modulations of wavelength, intensity, duration and treatment interval. The low level laser method/cold laser therapy is not yet accepted as routine medical therapy and more levels of evidence supporting its routine use is needed.

What I personally saw in the chiropractic conference was amazing seeing what can happen to a bony fracture healing in 4 weeks in a 66 year old or ulcerated sores healing completely after cold laser therapy use.

In the world of anti-inflammatories & pain killers like co-proxamol cold laser therapy looks like a promising source of natural anti-inflammatory treatment for those seeking neck pain relief and lower back pain relief. I look forward to learning more about cold laser therapy and its potential to help give my chiropractic patients natural pain relief.

LLLT Effects

The effects of Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) are photochemical, not thermal, and the responses of cells occur due to changes in photoacceptor molecules chromophores. Energy, which is delivered to the cells, produces insignificant and minimal temperature changes typically in the temperature range 0.1–0.5°C. The exact mechanism of action of Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is not completely understood. However, it is known that during low level laser irradiation, cells absorb the photon and its energy is incorporated into the chromophore and stimulates cellular metabolism. The molecule that has absorbed this energy is able to transfer this energy to another molecule and thus cause chemical reactions in surrounding tissue. This energy that has been transferred can increase the acceptor molecules kinetic energy, activate or deactivate enzymes or alter physical and chemical properties of macromolecules.

The exact nature of biostimulation or the effects of Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) in different medical fields requires extensive research. Although Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) has been in use for several years, this phototherapy is still not an established therapeutic modality. What is neither well known nor easily understood is that these low power lasers have been used in laboratories and clinics for years to modulate cell function, reduce pain and accelerate healing of soft tissue injuries.

Laser Wound Healing

A wound may be defined as any disruption of the tissues or organs of the body caused by injury.

Healing is the process by which the body replaces destroyed or dead tissue with living tissue. This may take place by first intention, in which the parts unite directly without the intervention of granulations. Healing by secondary intention, is the name given to the healing of a wound with separated edges due to tissue loss. Union occurs by the adhesion of granulation tissue.

There are five phases in the wound healing process:

  1. Haemostasis; the arrest of bleeding by involving the physiological processes of blood coagulation and contraction of blood vessels. Haemostasis lasts several minutes.
  2. Inflammatory phase; triggers neutrophils and macrophage migration into the wound. This phase lasts several days.
  3. Granulation; the formation of a multicellular mass of tissue which can last up to three weeks.
  4. Re-epithelization; basement proteins reappear in a very ordered sequence from the wound inward in a zipper like-fashion closing the epidermal defect.
  5. Wound contraction and tissue remodeling; growth factors and other peptides provide stimuli for wound contraction.

Wound healing involves a broad category of patients who require treatment with minimal trauma and few complications – patients with bedsores, skin disorders, ulcerations, and diabetics with delayed wound healing. Reports of Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) applied to soft tissues in vitro and in vivo suggest stimulation of specific metabolic processes in healing wounds. While low doses of Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) are stimulatoryhigh doses of laser radiation are suppressive.

Daily Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) during the postoperative period has been shown to stimulate collagen formation and increase the strength of a forming scar. Major changes seen in wounds treated with Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) include increased granulation tissue, early epithelialization, increased fibroblast proliferation and matrix synthesis and enhanced neovascularization.

So if you are suffering low back pain, sciatica or a pinched nerve in your neck and you were wondering what else you can do to find pain relief maybe you should ask your local chiropractor or doctor about Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT).
